Anna Maria Stanhope, the Duchess of Bedford, is credited for the creation of the now world-renowned afternoon tea. In the 1800's evening meals were progressively served later and this left the Duchess suffering from a "sinking feeling" each afternoon at about four o'clock. Initially, the Duchess asked her servants to sneak a pot of tea and a few breadstuffs to replenish herself.
Christmas Eve Dinner in Elgin Hotels and Resorts, on 24th and 25th December every year, has been celebrated in the same way without interruption, since 1887. It has been a tradition for Elgin to entertain guests with a Christmas Gala dinner, Cocktails and Music during Christmas week. In recent years, the voices and music of headline entertainers from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, America and France and Mauritius have also enthralled Elgin audiences.
